There was no sign of thunder, no alarm of lightning from the TM Golf Club, which was often ignored by windsurfers. Only a shower curtain over the skyline of Bintan and the city. Everybody was happily planning away in the long waited wind.
Out of the blue a lightning struck, just One. I heard an explosion, the thought of terrorist crossed my mind, instinctively I ducked, in a blink of eyelid I saw the sail in front of me the mast broke off and the guy fell into the water. The following few seconds that seems like hours he surfaced and climbed back onto his board. Hew! Those around also felt the electricity on the hand thru’ the boom.
Apart from the badly torn sail, the signature of lightning was obvious on the board near the mast foot. The mast conducted the electricity into the water, made a mark on the top and left a 30cm hole at the bottom, like gun shot? The black char was a big contrast on the white bottom board.
Maybe Mr.Boo should buy over the board and hang it up, as a reminder……..to the storm chasers……… who often trigger the club alarm
Mean time, just keep praying that He keeps an eye on all us the fun loving people. Thank God for the miracle that nobody was hurt yesterday, in this sport that we are often at the mercy of mother nature.
For more miracles……

He did not see the lighting, so it means it hit him head on from the mast down. Not a small but a real scary one. Glad he was not even hurt.

I think also baordmaker should study if a grounding will help to bring the lighting from the mast to the bottom of the board rather than thru the sailor or it means more trouble for the sailor inviting the lighting.

He was also near a buoy and some ships anchored. So surprising the lighting choose him than the ship that would provide a easier path. This certainly a good waring for all of us who was there.

Just wonder, did anybody see the lightning at all? All I knew was a deafening sound & shock. How does it look or sound like from the beach?

Its all so quick that I doubt even the earthing works.Luckily our body is a poorer conductor than the carbon mast. That at least provides some kind of safe guard, maybe a non-conductive boom might help?

It has happened. This is not the first time it happened on our east coast beach.Bottom line is ;for your own safety, DO NOT sail in a storm where there is a very high possibility of lighting and thunder.Sad to say that we are so hungry of wind in this small island that we all play Russian roulette like many who do not win and pay with dear life.Until next storm, happy sailing.

3 cm? Looks like its more than that. Damage looks like its done by a M16 rifle, clean entry, bores out at the back, happen to see the board at Ben's repair shop. 2-3cm on the deck, about 25 cm on the hull. Burnt smell of foam and fibreglass still present. The insides are hollowed out by burning.

I know in the earlt 80's Ramlee Saleh and a few guys also experienced a close strike. I beleive the electricty that ran through the boom threw him into the water. Kah Soon might have been one of the others on the water then.

Beleive it or not in the early days of ECSC whenever they was a storm, the management were the 1st people on the water especially during the week days. Jason Lim, Raymond and our then champion Ho Kah Soon, not forgetting Mr. 'Smily' Ramlee.

Back then even T.C. was not yet a windsurfer.

Anyway am glad that no one was injured in the recent incident.

Rgds,

Jon
