Author Topic: Shallow Water Fin for FF 158  (Read 449 times)

Anyone have a fin recommendation for shallow water sailing on Starboard FreeFormula 158 when water depth precludes use of standard 64cm or 70 cm fins? I recognize performance will not be optimum, however this is better than not sailing at all. Thanks for your suggestions.

I have also thought about this - perhaps it needs two more fin boxes - I don't think there's any shortcut without replacing the length with additional fins.  A custom 'trident like' fin might work (from the existng finbox), which would compress the two outside fins into the hull for stability.....

It might however have hydrofoil effects.  good or bad?

Have you tried a weed fin? These are raked back fins with the same cord width of formula fins but only about 50cm in board-base to fin-tip length.

Yes, have considered weed fins. Just looking for specific recommendations to go with a 9.0 Retro. Others have kindly suggested Tangent Dynamic Reaper 46, Lessacher Weed Duo, Curtics DC and Zen and True Ames Weed. Any others?

have only tried leading edge 50cm. Works well with 1m wide boards and sails 8.6-10.7m2.Slight loss in downwind ability and huge loss in upwind ability (but beats draging weed around a course).
Check http://members.iinet.net.au/~mick/leading.htm

for details

Cheers
