Down Under Pro 2012
Hawks Nest
28th Jan to 4th Feb 2012
Warmup event: 26th to 28th Jan 2012

www.FW-Australia.com

The location for the 2012 Downunder Pro Formula Windsurfing Championships is Hawks Nest’s charming and picturesque Jimmy’s Beach. Nestled between the coastal forests and pristine beaches of the Myall Lakes National Park, featuring spectacular views across the Port Stephens waterways and the Myall River. This is one of Australia’s best kept secrets.

Hawks Nest is a hive of family and sporting enthusiast activity with everything from snorkelling, swimming, surfing, fishing, golf, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

In 2012, the Downunder Pro will be the first Championships of the season for the Formula Windsurfing Class.  It’s the event of the year in Australia, for which all competitors and some candidates to the title of World Champion, eagerly await. The Regatta is also a Level 1.0 World Ranking Event for FW.

In Summertime, Hawks Nest enjoys mostly 10-15 knot gradient winds each day, with the possibility of seabreezes around 15 – knots (although winds can be stronger up to 30 knots at times); perfect for windsurfing! With average daytime temperatures of 25-33 degrees, spectators and competitors alike can expect to enjoy the brilliant sunshine almost every single day in Feburary.

Over the years, Hawks Nest has begun to be accepted as a premier location for hosting windsurfing events, and as a result, NSW’s main windsurfing racing club, Storm-Riders Windsurfing Club has been hosting many windsurfing regattas there over the past years.

The entry list shows the best of the best in FW will compete at these championships, as well as the top-ranked Australians. This includes current and 5-time Australian Champion Sean O’Brien [AUS-120], #1 World Ranked sailor from Brazil, Wilhelm Schurmann [BRA-999], and multiple time Australian Championships event winner and former #1 World Ranked sailor from Denmark, Jesper Vesterstrøm [DEN-111]. On top of this, a host of Australia’s best windsurfers from all over the country will be competing as well as many more internationals from New Zealand and the rest of the world.

The Australian Windsurfing Association invites you to the premier windsurfing event of the summer, right on the doorstep of Australia. This is your invitation to discover a whole new world of sporting regattas…

About Sean O'Brien:

Sean O’Brien is a 5x Australian and Oceanic Formula Windsurfing Champion and was ranked #9 in the World for Formula Windsurfing beginning the 2010 season. Sean helped qualify Australia for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a member of the Australian Sailing Team (Olympic Team) before injury forced him to retire from the RS:X class in late 2007. After this, Sean turned to coaching, beginning with integrating a new BIC Techno program in his home state of Queensland, Australia. He successfully qualified the last three Australian representatives for the ISAF Youth Sailing Championships in the BIC Techno class in both boys and girls fleets from sailors out of the Queensland BIC Techno Sailing Program.

In late 2009, Sean joined the Australian Sailing Team coaching staff, taking on the role of coaching Jessica Crisp, 4x Olympic windsurfer from Australia for women’s windsurfing. Sean coached Jessica to her first ever ISAF World Cup Series gold medal at Sail Melbourne in 2010. After 2010, Sean moved to Italy to begin development work at a new windsurfing sail brand, Point-7, based on Lake Garda where he currently works in digital media and sail/product development. In the past 2 years, Sean has run numerous formula windsurfing clinics and coaching sessions throughout Europe and Australia and also coached the Mauritius Formula Windsurfing Team to silver medals at the 2011 Indian Ocean Sailing Games, in Seychelles.

Sean is also the sole author of the very popular sailing blog, CarbonSugar.com where he writes numerous articles on design, technique, tactics and fitness for Formula Windsurfing.
