The first leg of the AWT concluded here yesterday in characteristic 40 knot conditions.
Antoine Albeau won but Robbie Radis ran him a very close 2nd.
The standard of the lighter weight local sailors was outstanding considering the conditions.
This oldfatbstd was firmly put in his place !! (Not quite last)
For 5-6 months each year you can choose between the windiest (and warm) freeride or wave conditions anywhere in the world. Not to mention the recently discovered speed course at Peng Peng beach. If the speed record isnt broken here, I'll eat my Div 2 board.
Many thanks to the AWT and Alex Mowday for a great event.
I will be back next year for a longer stay with a tiny slalom board and the smallest race sails I can find.
Everyone should go there at least once.
Happy Days.

Yeh George,
This place is definitely the windiest place. I take my hat off to those locals here sailing in almost in Force 7 - 9 conditions.
Sailing in "postcard" Peng Peng beach is an awesome experience and I will definitley come back to this place again.
Hey gang in S'pore, this place ROCKS !!
Many thanks to the Taipei base windsurfers and gang for making our stay an exciting one in Penghu.

Cheers

Discovered..........I thought Gedgee Waeen would
guarantee some anonymity.
I wonder what they called me on Taiwan TV (true story - make up girls and everything!!)
No doubt I was back to plain old Gorge again.

It was very nice to meet windsurfers from Singapore during the event.  I took some photos in Penghu at the event and also at other locations on the island during our search for waves and freestyle beaches.  It was a fun trip.

George

Looks absolutely awesome. After that you can do the events down here with your eyes closed. How many people does the event get? I'm sure it will just get bigger. Perhaps the PWA should take a look up there too.

To Pong and Loh racing this year right???

George,
Did Antoine Albeau do a few runs at Peng Peng?  What did he have to say about it?

We stopped Antoine and Eric while they were drag racing and doing freestyle with scooters around the blocks in the evening.  They were very friendly to sit and have beer with us on the street for about half an hour.  We asked as many technical questions as we could on waves and freestyle tricks and got a lot of tips from them.  Antoine said Peng Peng beach has very good speed potential, but he did not bring his 40cm-wide speed board to Penghu for this trip.  After some beer, Antoine and Eric went back on the street taking their rental scooters to the limit again.  After about 10 minutes, Eric came back laughing saying Antoine's scooter broke down.  We saw Alex help Antoine resolve the problem with the rental shop.  Surprisingly, Antoine is drag racing again in 5 minutes, with a big grin and a bigger engine.  I guess some people are just born to race.

Post Script

Eric Girard (sworn to secrecy about who he is) won all the Fosters beer drinking contests and later wrote off his scooter, half his face and  3 chipped teeth.
He looked a very sad camper next day and could only stuff skinny McD's fries in one side of his mouth !
Stout fellow though still went out on a GO board and performed for the film crew in the harbour.

I think about 60 registered of which 50 or so raced.
Not sure when the speed sailors will be back but for sure they will

Lionel, the entire tour is video taped and broadcast over several sports channels. I'll see if i can dig out a previous tape and load it.
