Many of the Garmin GPS receivers like the Foretrex 201 and the Geko models have been discontinued. Other than that, the Garmin devices are not really suited for speed measurements as they have been developed primarily for navigational purposes such as trekking, fishing and lately for driving. Except for the maximum speed, the speed information stored in the devices is computed from positional data which is not very accurate because the Garmin instruments record the positional coordinates to a limited number of decimal places.

Many windsurfers use the GT-11 or GT-31 from Locosys Technology, a Taiwanese company. These instruments can store data obtained from Doppler speed measurements which are supposed to be more accurate. In spite of having said all this, I'm still using an old Garmin Geko 201 which has seen better days!

Cheers!

I've got one I'd happily sell. Hardly used & never used at sea. Immaculate condition and all the bits are still there.
I also have a waterproof carrier for it.
Still interested or has Denis changed your mind?

Hello FKPhil I have a friend who's looking for one maybe you can quote on this thread. I send him the link and he sees pics and price in US$ would be easier if you can or sgd dollars would be fine. I have been using the F201 for 3yrs now windsurfing, kiting, running, sup and etc. works well a bit accurate with the new websites opening up with better filtering programs. The difference is mostly just .02 of a knot with 3 websites. Regards,John (jp)

Sorry JP but F2 has already bought it.
Maybe he'll sell it on when it tells him he's not going as fast as he'd hoped Smiley
