Sailing: SingaporeSailing bank on Wearn Haw

SINGAPORE: After a search of almost two months, SingaporeSailing will appoint Tan Wearn Haw as their new chief executive.

Wearn Haw, who returned to sail for Singapore at last month’s Asian Games in the keelboat event after a five—year absence, will occupy one of the most high—profile seats among the 64 national sports associations (NSAs) in the country.

"It’s definitely an honour (for me). It will be a big task but it’s great because I enjoy challenges," he told MediaCorp on Tuesday.

"It’s also a way for me to give back to the sailing community as I was one of the first few batches of kids (then) to go through the (junior sailing) programme started by the likes of (former president and current International Olympic Committee vice—president) Mr Ng Ser Miang. Sailing has given me many experiences."

Wearn Haw succeeds Australian Andrew Sanders, who left the post in February.

SingaporeSailing is one of the highest—funded NSAs in the country and, since 2004, has produced 17 world champions in the junior and youth classes, as well as a combined 18 medals, including seven golds, from the last two Asian Games.

Crowned Sportsboy of the Year in 1993, Wearn Haw studied in France and the United Kingdom under a Public Service Commission (PSC) scholarship.

He competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as well as professionally on the World Match Racing Tour and America’s Cup.

He will see out his role as a sports officer at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and SingaporeSailing are in discussions with the ministry on a release date for him.

The search for a new high—performance chief to succeed Mark Robinson, who has also decided to move on, continues but SingaporeSailing president Dr Ben Tan believes Wearn Haw is the right man to helm the NSA.

"He is an accomplished sailor in a variety of classes, from single—handed, double—handed, windsurfing, keelboats, America’s Cup and mega—yachts to extreme 40 catamarans," said Dr Tan.

"His extensive sailing credentials, strong engineering training, development as a PSC scholar and work experience in the MCYS, Singapore Sports Council and Singapore Sports School equip him with a unique skill set that is ideal for the job."

Details of his plans will be finalised soon but it will be aligned to "The Next Leg", a six—year blueprint unveiled by SingaporeSailing recently.

Said Wearn Haw: "For me, it’s about adding value into sailing. That will be my key priority." —

...a windsurfer in a senior position in SG sports, that's gotta be a good thing!

More wind?  I doubt that.

Maybe more money - the next best thing (?)

"a windsurfer in a senior position in SG sports, that's gotta be a good thing!"

Hi! there, PlaneSailin,

Congrats!! to Wearn Haw on his appointment as CEO of SSF.

Hopefully, he'll revamp the sailing & windsurfing scene in SG.

It's not going to do any good if SSF & WAS don't follow International standards in training & conduct races for windsurfing.

I just got back from the Raja Muda Regatta, during the passage race from Penang-Langkawi, wind 30+ kts.

Regards

On behalf of the Windsurfing Association Singapore (WAS), we would like to congratulate Wearn Haw on his appointment as the new Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Sailing Federation. With his leadership and strong ties with the Windsurfing community, I'm sure that windsurfing in Singapore is set to grow and flourish to return to it's former glory days.

Hi Paul,
with all due respect, when you mention '...it's not going to do any good if SSF & WAS don't follow International standards in training & conducting races for windsurfing...', may i clarify what you mean exactly? To the best of my knowledge, both SSF and WAS follow the ISAF guidelines for conducting of our regattas. On the WAS end, we are working with the International Windsurfing Association (IWA) to sanction the SIM 30th Singapore Open Asian Windsurfing Championship 2011. The IWA will continue to sanction Asian Championship events in Singapore for 2011 to 2014, in accordance with a MOU with WAS to keep the Asian Championships in Singapore.

Yes I would agree that windsurfing has not been the top priority on SSF's agenda in the past years, but I am convinced under the new leadership of Dr. Ben Tan and his new CEO Wearn Haw, we will see the resurgence of windsurfing locally. Regarding the issue of training, I believe that there is no 'one best way' or International Standard in which to groom our local windsurfing talents. We can only aim to expose them to as much competition as possible, and the rest is up to them. With WAS bringing the RSX, Techno293 and IMCO Asian Championships to our shores, it is our goal to expose our local windsurfers to the top echelon of competition without incurring the huge expense of sending our windsurfers overseas. With the likes of 2008 Olympic Women's Bronze Medalist Bryony Shaw, 2010 RS:X Youth World Champion Thomas Goyard and Mistral Pro windsurfer Anders Bringdal coming to compete in the Singapore Open, I'm sure that our windsurfers will benefit greatly from their presence. Also, a training camp from 7th to 9th January is being arranged so that these top windsurfers and other countries' windsurfers will interact with our own, exchange pointers, train together and learn from each other. Talks and clinics are being arranged so that recreational windsurfers can also benefit.

If you have more input as to how we can further improve our race management and training systems, please do not hesitate to let WAS know and we shall communicate the ideas to SSF for joint implementation.

Eh Wearn Haw. Congrats. On a more shallow note, let me, Andrew Foo, Joshua Lim and Meng Monkey know when you are free for a celebration.

Once again, congrats
