I had so much publicity I had to call Max Clifford to manage it.
A flotilla of Press boats (with the occupants throwing up), helicopters etc.
They left from PD and we sort of met somewhere near the middle.
It was front page news in the Malay Mail next day.
I did it for charity and because it was there.

More fascinating tidbits...if my sources are correct, the original lineup was modified somewhat for yesterdays attempt.  As you may remember, there was meant to be a team of 3 windsurfers (using KY Sails); one representing SG, one from Malaysia, and one token Ang Moh representing an obscure European country.  It was meant to say something about the international brotherhood of windsurfing or whatever.  This noble concept was abandoned yesterday; instead just ONE windsurfer went, leaving his international teammates behind in a quest for solo fame (you can guess who). He was accompanied by a kiter from SG.  So, what (or should I say, who) is it really all about?

Looking forward to hearing more details!


(BTW it's not all bad, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with just going out for a sail, whether you reach an island or not!  And at least they tried!)

Wah, still no update on the KY website?  It's been days!  What is this - a media blackout?  Surely there's a way to put a positive spin on it?? 

This would look great in the local newspaper: "Windsurfing hero quits because it's windy"....hey there's something familiar about that....

Onward to Tioman!    For the King!

Ok folks, it's been long enough, time to call it...

 

The challenge: it was announced that during the 2010 SW monsoon, 3 sailors from 3 different countries, were to make a run from Mersing to Tioman, united under the flag of The Bryan Norman Boom fan club Windsurfing.  

We've had several good days of double digit wind (I should know because I was lucky enough to catch some of them) during the last few months.  I believe the leader of "Team Oakley" was actually in Malaysia, in the vicinity of Mersing during at least one of those days.

So...did they do it?  Did they really even try?

There was that one aborted attempt, when the fearless leader made a brief, mad dash without his "teammates", but turned back when it possibly got too windy to continue in style. Was that all?  Was that all these grand proclamations amounted to? Not even an attempt to slog it out on a longboard, just to show some determination?


Anyone got more info, or is that it?

 



BTW, I'm planning to windsurf to the moon during the 2011-2012 NE.  Currently seeking corporate sponsors.  Looking at the major Tequila companies  ;-)

So that's it, then. The challenge has not been answered. Game Over for the current incarnation of the Mersing-Tioman thing. But will the self-proclaimed "King" launch a new bid for glory? Probably.

Don't get me wrong here, people. Nobody gains from Norman's failure. His...well, "public humiliation" is really the phrase we're after...we live and learn, and none of us can be perfect.
Still, he's almost certainly one of the top 50 windsurfers currently active in Singapore. That's nothing to sneeze at.

And the Moon Mission is ON! See you in 2011!
