some reports from 1st day of racing (2 races) ;

Home support and light winds - despite a forecast for thunderstorms - helped local sailor Audrey Pei Lin Yong (SIN) on Tuesday at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Yong came fourth in race one and first in the second race in the girls Techno 293, fighting off strong performances from world champion Naomi Cohen (ISR) and Veronica Fanciulli (ITA) on the first day of the regatta at the National Sailing Centre.

"The winds out there were quite light, quite shifty, but it is home ground advantage so I have been training in this kind of winds for the past two weeks. It's normal," said Yong.

Our SIN gal is currently 2nd overall after 4 races.

ISR is leading both boy/girl events.

With the final race coming up today, the Singapore dinghy sailors are too far behind in points to hope for
even a bronze medal.  The only possibility lies in windsurfing.  Audrey may pick up a bronze.  Everything depends on today's race.  Singapore Sailing may yet salvage its reputation through windsurfing.  How ironic!  And to think that they were even thinking of leaving the windsurfers out of the YOG Singapore sailing team altogether!

Hi! there, Denis,

Windsurfing wasn't chosen to represent Singapore in YOG2010.

ISAF gave a wildcard entry to Singapore for 3rd sailor in the sailing event.

Depends on weather conditions today, silver & bronze is up for grabs between the top 7 girls.

Dow gets gold for her fantastic performance for Thailand.

Medal race cannot discard, so the points left after 2 discards.

THA- 9
ITA - 26
ISR - 30
ARG- 32
SIN- 32
ESP- 33
BLR- 41

Points for Gold Medal race counts double.

Do you mean to say that ISAF allows only two sailors per country irrespective of which class?

How does that work?  If Israel ends up one position behind SIN does that mean they will have the same total points finally?

Hi! there, Denis,

That's correct, ISAF rules, 2 sailors, boy & girl to be selected from the 4 sailing events, even if a country qualified for all 4 events.

If I'm not mistaken, ISAF holds 40 wildcard spots.

Double points, tie-break decided on race positions from series, ends with position at last race.

Interesting isn't it.  The coaches & team managers should've done all the calculations, short of using an abacus.

That's really interesting indeed!  This means that Siripon, in spite of her commanding lead, cannot afford a DNS, DNF or DSQ in the Medal Race.

I wonder if ISAF gave out all of its 40 wildcard slots.  If each country is only allowed to enter one boy and one girl for sailing then it's hardly worth organizing the sailing event, is it?  All that money spent and all the inconveniences.  Think of our poor members who received parking tickets for parking in front of the Club!

Hi! there, Denis,

You haven't count the $$ the sailors have to spend & try to qualify for the event.

1 continental, 1 Worlds qualifier, 1 World Championship, how many more overseas event??

Total the number of sailors in the training squad.
