Author Topic: New Beaches in Penghu, Taiwan  (Read 787 times)

Recently our friends at Penghu Islands have found an excellent speed course at Peng Peng Beaches.

This photo above was taken with a plastic disposable waterproof camera on an easy 25-knot NE day at Peng Peng Beach.  Due to shallow water and side-offshore wind, the smooth water is perfect to test speed limits.  NE blows 20+ knots almost every day from October to March in Penghu.  Imagine how fast they will go on 45-knot days.

This photo shows Peng Peng Beaches from above. These two beaches did not appear above water until 1995 and are still expanding in size.  Now people are getting there only by boats, perhaps by boards in the near future.

Asian Windsurfing Tour is having the season's first event at Penghu from the 14th - 18th of November.  Hope to see you guys there.

Hi Jason,
This is Gil from HKG. We're planning to go Penghu soon. Is the place you showed difficult to find and normally how long it takes by boat? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hi Jason,

The place (pic) looks awesome !
Will be in Taipei for a night stopover and then to Penghu for next month's AWT event. How far is Peng Peng beaches from Makung ? How do we go about to get in contact with the local boatman to get us there ? Will be truly stoke to sail there and see you in PH soon    .

Peng Peng Beach is 30 minutes boat ride from Makung.  I think the Penghu event organizer Alex Mowday  alex@windsurf-penghu.com has been there for speed runs, he is probably the best person to contact when you arrive Penghu.  Enjoy!

Looks great. Perhaps the world speed record folks should take a look at Peng Peng.

Will have to mention this to chris L . He has been driving his new speed board through slop on the river to over 36 knots (GPS) in just over 25k of breeze and is itching to see what it will do in some "real" wind and flat water.

It's possible that one of the world's fastest highwind rider Antoine Albeau (F-192) will go to Penghu for the AWT event this November and do speed runs at Peng Peng beach.  That would be exciting to watch.

Looks like a top spot. Which month is most likely to get wind over 40 knots? How regular is it?

40-knot days in Penghu occur more often than 4-knot days between November and March.  I have been there twice on 4-day trips (Feb. 2000 and Nov. 2000), one day in each trip I was overpowered on 3.5m sails in 40+ knots.  The rest of the days I used sails under 5.0m.

Alex Mowday of Liquid Sports has provided some information on weather for Penghu:

Link to 15-knot crusing photos from yesterday (Nov. 1st, Saturday) at Peng Peng Beach:

Nov. 1st, 2003  at Peng Peng Beach

This time they went from main island by boards, not by boat.
