board transportation question
«
on:

hey all , was thinking of bringing a board from spore to aus with a board bag as checked in luggage. Will there be a surcharge as the shape of the luggage is rather long? or it will be alrite as long as the baggage limit is not exceeded?

Depends on airline and size/weight of equipment.
BA have a no windsurfing equipment policy

When I went to Aust in 2007, Qantas allowed passengers to check in one full set of windsurfing gear free. They didn't notice that I was actually taking two sails, either! I believe it's much harsher now, though. I've sent you a PM...

Its always a good idea to check the small print on "sports eqpt" first.
Regardless of that, e-mail the country manager and ask for some extra (free) baggage allowance.
Tell them you taking part in a competition in Oz and sailing for Singapore.
The Asian airlines are a lot more tolerant than the gweilo ones.
As Ian says BA (Bstd Airlines) wont even take them - wankers.
Air Asia has a good policy.....
Surf boards, bikes, scuba and golf eqpt incurs £ 15 surcharge form London to KL as "sports eqpt"
No mention of windsurfing so mine came free. I had no check in stuff and the bag weighed (surprisingly!)exactly 20kgs.
Good luck.

definitely chech again with ur airline:
I heard that air france, for ex, is in the process of changing the rules, which is making carrying windsurfing equipement prohibitively expensive...

Sounds like Air Chance is going the same way as Bstd Airways !!
Pity because I use KLM a lot and their policy wasnt too bad.
One bag up to 32 kgs for 80 euros Ams to KL.
Sad to say but Cloggie airways is just not the same since they were taken over by the snail eaters !!
I'm almost converted to Air Asia now as their business ticket (round trip Uk-KL) is not much more than the KLM cattle class ticket !

Funny funny funny...at least I wasn't some tourist, bringing my own gear for a short stay, thus depriving the local windsurf centre of income ;-)
