The 2010 PSC International Regatta was held from 26th to 28th Feb 2010 at the Penang Swimming Club. As an annual pilgrimage, many of the seasoned Singaporean formula windsurfers make the 1 hour plane ride to meet up with old friends and to sail the fair winds off the coast of Penang. Apart from the warm friendly ties and the fabulous food that keep us coming back year after year, it must be the fierce competition, sailing in 15 to 20 knot winds with a beautiful Penang backdrop that is the main draw of this event.

This year, there were close to a hundred sailors from the optimist, laser and 470 classes, with the formula fleet comprising about 10 sailors made up mostly of Malaysians (Johor Bahru, Penang, etc) and Singaporeans. There were 2 main competitions, namely the famous windsurfing marathon and the actual Regatta.

PSC Marathon
Never failing to disappoint, the Penang northerly winds picked up right on time, gusting up to 18 knots on the marathon day. It was favourite and veteran, chairman of the MYA Yeap Leong Soon who got off to a good start, leading the pack of windsurfers. Alas, he was third time unlucky, as he was confused with the numerous buoys stretched along the vast marathon route. Missing one mark at the start, he was unfortunately disqualified, earning himself a self- professed "hat-trick". This allowed the next 3 sailors, Meng, Chai and Harold Ma to complete the marathon in the top three positions. It took nearly an hour of ferocious sailing in strong winds to complete the marathon course. All the sailors were nicely and sorely acquainted with Penang winds by then.

PSC International Regatta
The actual regatta took place next day. Winds of up to 15 knots graced the eager sailors, which was made even more memorable by the very exciting and close competition. Just before the third race, championship contender Meng, already with two firsts in the bag, suffered a stroke of bad luck when his Evo RS2 sail tore in the vital middle section for no apparent reason. He miraculously managed to fend off his close competitors to finish first in that race as well. Alas, as the torn panel became too big to sail effectively, he had to retire in the 4th race. Still, with 3 firsts, he was in prime position for gold. The favourite and probably more unlucky Leong Soon made a series of unforced errors and ended up in second place.

Second day of racing started with very light winds. In fact, when the formula class flag went up, only 2 sailors made it to the start line on time. The others struggled against the strong currents and marginal winds to cross the gate before it closed. With the wind picking up only in the later part of the afternoon, the OD managed to run only one more race before the stipulated last start of day. Meng managed to finish first in that final race, sealing his position as the overall champion for PSC International Regatta 2010. Coming in second was Leong Soon and Goh Thye Hock was third placed.

We look back on the Penang Regatta with fond memories. With all the amazing experience and good times, you can be sure that many more Singaporeans will be returning for years to come. It is hoped that perhaps, a slalom category can also be incorporated so that many more enthusiasts can be included in this unforgettable and well-organised event.
