Hi all,
My name is Tim and I'm in charge of PR and Media for the Windsurfing Association Singapore.
I'm keen to organise a windsurfing event in the waters of Marina Reservoir, better known to some as Marina Barrage, during the South West Monsoon. I've been to the venue a few times and the NE-Monsoon winds actually reach that area pretty well. I'm led to believe that the SW-Monsoon winds will be just as good, if not better.
Thinking of possibly having Formula, Raceboard and perhaps Slalom races there. I've received some positive feedback on havin SUP racing together with the windsurfing classes.
It would be really great to have a race at a new venue, not to mention the kind of publicity it would generate. Imagine racing in full view of the public, with media coverage of the event. The 29th SIM Singapore Open was a big success with lots of publicity due to the YOG 2010 and I'm led to believe that with more exposure, windsurfing in Singapore will definitely grow.
What say the netizens of this forum?
Cheers, Tim (SIN 4)

Tim, an excellent proposition. The area is pretty exposed to the southerly winds & coupled with the flat waters, it might be suitable for racing.

That is a good idea. Wonder how is it like to sail there.

Sailing was pretty alright when they did the extreme40 sailing series there during the NE. However the fact that it was really huge catamarans so it just might vary for us. I suggest we a few rounds of ground testing before continuing on with a full fledged event.

Sounds interesting. I don't mind going there to test out on one of the weekends if we are allowed to do so.

In case you are not aware of it, PA Water Venture has a canoeing centre in Marina Reservoir on the Kallang River side under Merdeka Bridge. You can probably ask them whether you are allowed to windsurf there.

Hi guys, i think we should do a recce there one of these days.
We'll probably need a permit to do stuff there at the reservoir so I'll make some calls and see what needs to be done to get the permit.
If all goes well, I'll let you'all know and we could make a trip there for some leisurely sailing just to test the conditions and all before we gear up for an actual large scale regatta.
Cheers, Tim (SIN-4)

Hi all,
Seems it's not as easy as it seems. We've gotta get an event permit JUST to have a recce. This means that we have to give exact details, who's involved, safety coverage procedures, etc etc. Tall order if you ask me.
BUT. I am going to speak with Edwin, who's the head honcho of SingaporeSailing, and see what he can set us up for. I've spoken to him once before about hosting an event there and he said he's willing to help us out.
Lets just hope for the best!
Cheers, Tim (SIN-4)
