Sukhdev, I was reviewing your fin technique section and the general rule that maximum fin lenght = board width at 1 foot off the tail. How much larger fin can you go with? I imagine skill level, size of sailor, wind conditions factor into this answer. At what point would you expect to see structual damage to board or fin? Thanks for your answer.

how much larger you can go depends on the total lift generated by the fin and the ability/weight of the sailor to control it. 4 to 6 cm more sometimes...depends on fin as well (foil type, chord length, profile, rake, flex). my rule of thumb is that if i feel serious pain on the front of my shins then its time to downsize fin (upwind sailing). for reaching its opposite, i like to go as small as possible.

assuming good fin construction, you are more likely to see real physical pain on the front of shins rather than any damage to board etc. Its rare to see fin box damage these days, we do a lot of repairs and this is about bottom of the list.
