check out this report and photos on last year's event.

http://www.bluefinz.com/forum/index.php/topic,2292.0.html

this year the wind has been good too, a bit more than last year.

as for marathon, u need a board that can go upwind very well, slalom board will definately put u in a hopelessly disadvantage.
average distance for the marathon race is about 19km (clocked on my GPS last year)

Hmm.. that will put slaloms sailor out of the competition.. Maybe the organiser should look into organising a "downwind" or "beam reach" marathon race for next year since the wind speed clock an average of 12 -18 kts according to the report?? That is quite a decent wind speed for slalom board and will potentially attract more people without formula gears to attend the event..

Good point Blackhawk........but bless his heart, Penang Mafia wouldnt win a slalom race !!!! (Kudos though to his Formula skills)
However, some sort of "master blast" type race is simple to arrange and would encourage some "fun"  racers to go up.
Its a pity because Penang is such a good place to visit.
Happy memories of the Xmas regattas there with 60 or 70 Div 1 & 2 boards racing and some legendary dinners.

At the last race here in the muddy waters, Penang Mafia dumped the formula board and was seen performing on a shortboard. No doubt getting some practice in for the Penang open, should slalom become an item.
