Hi guys

I just broke one of the camber on my sail today after forcing it into the mast. #$%@!

Any tips for sails with cambers that are like pigs to rig? Besides roasting it please..

I have an RS5 and if I follow the bellow process, it is actually very easy to snap the cams in place:

1/ slide the mast all the way up to the top of the sail, ON TOP of the cams.

2/ downhaul ( I need a crank because tension is very high) until the mast appears through the boom opening. you will need to be close to fully downhauled: I say 3 cm between the sail pulley and the extensions pulley. ( as a ref, when I am fully DH the sail pulley is usually 1cm from the extension pulley )

3/ attach your boom to the mast and give your sail a bil of outhaul.

4/ realease the DH fully

5/ install the cams -> push on the junction batten/mast pannel (NOT on the mast panel itself). they should pop in extremely easily, without effort.
I tend to put the two cams around the boom first then the bottom one then the top one.

6/ fully DH your sail.

7/adjust outhaul.

to de-rig:

1/ remove the boom.

2/ release  the DH very slowly ->  the cams pop out on their own.

Hope this helps. When I follow this method, the sail is surprisingly fast and easy to rig / derig.

Thank you Matt. Very much appreciated. It's almost the same thing that I did, but I never release the DH fully after attaching the boom. Will try that. Smiley

@ m3l : Are you kidding? I'm not even half-way across a season Cheesy

Apologies if this was too detailed, I did not mean to patronize you... :-)
I personally ran into cam problems when I did not DH enough BEFORE installing the boom -> that's when cam s are hard to pop in place.

matt, i truly appreciate your detailed guide - no worries. To be honest, I've never learned to rig sails the proper way. It never came to my concern until I broke that cam. So, thanks again! Smiley

Not necessary to release the DH. Open all the zip pocket ( it helps to stretch the luff )

I pop the lowest cam first. To pop the one top and bottom of boom. The trick I learnt is to put one hand into the luff  opening and twist the camber onto the mast .

@matt - I'm based in Kuantan, Malaysia actually. So you won't see me on the water until the next Singaporean open perhaps.

@PJ - This one doesn't have zip pockets unfortunately. But you're spot on about them make rigging a hell lot faster & easier.

symail,

normally if i rig such sails, i would pull the outhaul flat, then 10 or 20 percentage of downhaul.
from there i will push the cams hard onto the mast

the key is to find the sweet spot on the downhaul so that the cams can comfortably pop in...

nowdays ,the modern wide sleeve sails eliminate such problems, so easy to rig/derig.

happy sailing

i guess everyone answered it right already but to me always downhaul bit by bit helping all cams go down and not downhauling assuming the cams are sliding perpendicular as you tug.. Wink
