Hi Greg, If you can get some coverage and mileage for the event, I can get some product sponsors for you. Sunscreen perhaps...this was very well sought after during our Monsoon Madness event over the years. I got some good connections. George loves these sachets... You can contact me thru my email : irene2leo@gmail.com or 019 - 335 4301

G'day all Wow, things are looking good. Great replies from Warren and LeoLeow to whom i've PM'd. Remember that we are still planning and until we can guarantee international TV, we're still n first gear. We plan to offer unequalled goodies from BIG prize money to free everything - primarily to get foreigners and guarantee the best possible spectacle; yes Singaporians are foreigners All the replies from this forum have been VERY helpful and i can't tell you how grateful i am. We will ensure there's a spare Tiger or two for everyone who's replied. Once all is in place, Race Notice out by May. cheers and keep the comments coming, all helpful. greg

Greg, The AWT events were mostly coverd by Sportshows International from UK. Typically, they'd send 3 film crew and produce a 30 minute sports/travel film. The cost was around US$ 25,000. They have recently been covering the Monsoon Cup yachting event where they send up to 18 film crew ! Whilst the individual events had no obligation to pay for the film, one or two managed to get the local Tourist Office to pay. Here, we tried everything to do the same but to no avail. We could never understand why they wouldnt pay because the statistics on viewer numbers around the world were far in excess (for the money) of any other media. The new TDC boss (Azalina ??) is the ex-Sports Minister and may well be more open minded than the previous one. You basically have to pay to guarantee a big turnout and to give TDC credit, they did fly in about 20 international sailors for the last event. Most will come for the price of a flight, hotel and food ! Our prize money was quite modest at around RM 15,000. GW

I think it would be a good idea if you can include other sailing divisions such as the Optimist, Laser & Dinghies. They are known to be sponsor magnets. Plus that in the current state of MYA they have been more supportive to this classes than say windsurfing & kitesurfing (almost exclusively). Have to do with the fact that our population is probably around 5% compared to number of sailors in Malaysia.

Comment taken with thanks. Our December event is exclusively for dinghies. Did i not mention that earlier. The objective of this event is to complement the dinghy event with a different type of athlete with different TV audiences, thereby giving sponsors dual exposure and make the state government happier.
For our sponsors, we are trying to offer a combined product = more sponsors = more prizes etc = more participation. These are all great comments. greg

Yes I have read that post rather intensively indeed. Perhaps segregation between windsurfing from other classes is a good idea. That's cool.
Much to my concern is that July's wind is most likely to be more conducive to the dinghies while December is when the windsurfers are usually out especially those with slalom gear. These boys represent more than half the population of the windsurfing community.

Was the RM15,000 total prize money or first prize only? Our preliminary budget for prizes totals RM41,750. It could end up much less ... sponsors???! Yes, July is better for windsurfing but you guys are easier to organise. Getting 200 dinghies here by July is impossible. We should be able to get 100 windsurfers here without worrying too much about Europe, NZ, Australia etc. We hope to have dinghies from everywhere. We're trying to source a few boards for rent for the weekend. Sorry about the wind. I hope you don't have to paddle half the way. Now, it's all up to sponsors and TV. Once that's in place, we're off. If we have to pay for TV, we have already budgeted for it. MYA is very supportive of our plans but as i said, not much experience with windsurfing. greg

Norman, I'd like to see you do an average speed of 25 - 35 kmh over a distance of 100km.
So would I - Preferably out to sea!!

Sorry about the wind. I hope you don't have to paddle half the way. You did say it is meant to be an endurance event.

hi greg,
i read your event in this forum with great interest.
i'm sure it will be a good event if it is planned well and of course, good $ponsorship will help alot.
just to share an event in Phuket which I attended last year 2008. it was a windsurfing rally sailing from the north of Phuket till the south of it. it took 4 days (about 3 hrs or 20+km each day) to complete this marathon. we sailed thru some of the best tourist beaches with great welcoming parties everynite for the sailors. also, there were ample of beers and drinks plus free flow in discos.
the invited sailors were ex and current olympic/national sailors from Europe, America and Asia. everyone had a great time and race.
the event was well supported by the Thai government and even the Thai Minister of Tourism attended closing and prize giving ceremony.
i do hope Malaysia can put in a great windsurfing event as the sport has been on demise for sometime now.

Hi all Just a quick update- 1. Have met with five of our locals and their enthusiasm suggests that we have a highly experienced management committee who can manage the whole "do". 2. Have settled international TV coverage thru 164 million pay-TV subscribers via over 20 international sports channels. 3. Are preparing a Powerpoint and brochure to enlist support from several of Malaysia's largest exporters as well as the federal government. 4. We are pursuing the idea of joint windsurfing/dinghy package deal for sponsors and UK telecasters.
Date still not confirmed but early to mid August seems most likely.
Sincere thanks to Ghafar, Salina, Leo, Irene, George (back in UK by now)
Please be patient guys.
cheers greg

Hello everybody, i am a french student, and i might come and set up myself in penang for 6 months. I sail quite a lot in france, but in waves, regarding to the information i got from internet, penang is not a really windy place, and it is possible to go on the water with some slalom equipment. I am kind of it, but maybe i ll start, Or in freestyle ?? do you think it can work. I haven't found anything about waves in penang, do you think it is possible to surf by there? If i am in the area for the competition, i will be glad to help you in the organisation, and maybe compete if i have some gear !!!! talk to you soon bye
