Hi
After trying out a hypersonic 105 i have decided to buy one. Unfortunately the budget only stretches to the wood board and a 9m rig or the DRAM board and 2 sails. The sails i own currently, which i would use on the hyper are two 1998 north pryros (twin cam) in 6m and 7.5m sizes. my question is, is it worth getting the wood board, stick with those sails and a 9m sail or get a DRAM board and replace one of the two pyros with something more modern and get the 9m. If its any use im 172cm and weigh 80kgs and looking to use it mainly in flat water summer cruising to partner my wave boards.
Thanx in advance
Ben

Tough call. The wood board has a cripser feel and is a tad lighter and the DRAM is cheaper but the decision really revolves round your sails.

If I remember correctly the Pyro from that period had a draft back feel which needed quite a bit of outhaul and it worked well with heavier boards. That sail's strength was its soft feel and balanced handling. One thing about the hyper - the quick accelaration is unforgiving of sails that are not stable and I've often found that moving a rig from a heavier board to the hyper requires quite a bit of retuning.

I'm inclined to suggest going for the DRAM with 2 new sails, a 9.0 and 7.5 would pretty much be all you need; although an excellent sail in its time the weaknesses of the Pyro may be all too apparent on this new hull. Depending on which 7.5 you went for you could get a massive range out of those two sails, enough to be able to step down to your wave gear.

Thanks for your quick responce.i demoed the wood version with a 7m pryo from 1997 and it seemed to be ok but then i wasnt overpowered so i didnt really test the full capabilities of the sail/board combo. that and i havent sailed any modern large sails so maybe i dont really know what im missing out on. Ill try and get to a demo day and try the two versions out side by side with different rigs and hopefully ill get a better insight to the way forwards.
Thanks again
