Dear members

Would like to start a thread on GPS speed trial for our local sailors. Objective is to log your top speed telling us the  equipment used and wind conditions. Need some input from all members how this should be organized and what are the various classes to create . What kind of sample rate for best accuracy ? Who to be the time keeper or witness ? .....

GPS results ( Below 8m )
GPS results ( 8m & above )
GPS results ( 80 Kg and above )
GPS results ( Gear below SGD 1,500 )

Pls provide yr inputs to get this going .

Way to go Peej! I like Smiley

The thing I'd like to suggest is that it should be an "Open" contest, i.e. anyone can use any board, any size sail, in any conditions anywhere. After all, in the end it all boils down to gear, skill, trimming, guts. And a bit of luck being at the right place at the right time.

Obviously your result has to be verifiable by means of GPS file, such as GPX.

As for valid runs, I've no idea what is better, a minimum of 2 seconds, 5 seconds or more, or maybe a minimum of 100 meters or 500 meters. I vote for keeping things simple.

Bottom line: raw straight line speed.

Great idea, let's get it rolling in time for the NE eh.

I like to suggest the following format :

Max Speed :  ( Post on Subject in Km/h ) - no special sampling requirements to suit most GPS

Name :   P.J.SU 70 kg 178 cm
Equip  :   08 iSonic 122   Maui TR2-7.6m  Select Custom40cm hard
Date   : 1st Jan  outside Safra  NE-20kts
Witness : No.
Remark : Flat water, making use of gust from the landing jet...........

We will start one thread for results only. Discussion on the result can be post separately.  Let's make it simple and start today. At the end of NE will decide the most impressive results ( not necessary fastest )

glad that we are starting to have some fun on GPS.

my PB (personal best) was clocked at 29.4 kts
Ben Jr clocked 28kts.
luck and condition varies
only 2 of us were using GPS at Changi.

can achieved better PB with current better NE.
ideal GPS devices will be Garmin 201 and Naviman GT-11

it's more fun than racing.
u can push yourself and gear to the limits alone.

there's always a speedster inside us. let it out and rip !!

i may do a group buy for Naviman GPS.
price is S$182 (revised price) plus freight, arm-strap etc.. (everything).
let see who is interested, indicate your interest asap.

have a honking 2008 and happy sailing

1. First of all, we have to agree on the GPS unit to use. Note that there is a speed discount on Garmin units. Not all GPS devices are created equal.
2. How to confirgure or standardise settings on the units?
3. How do we agree on the units of measurement to use for e.g. 2 sec runs or 10 sec runs?
4. What software for analysing speed?
5. How should data be presented?
6. Can we appoint Meng to lead the pack as he have the most experience and also the best speed so far?

NE looks promising this year and speed trials should keep the exitement going. I have a GT-11 and the unit does not fit well in a standard Aquapak as the fit is too tight. Buttons can pushed accidently. The ones from H2Otek looks good. Can we collectively purchase them in order to save on freight?

I'm not able to change the setting on my Garmin Etrex. that is why I suggest to make it easy and simple for most not to specify any sampling rate. The witness serve as a check only and is all on individual integrity to present the true results . If we have to download and analyze, then will need additional docking station and not all GPS owners will hv it. SInce NE is approaching. Let's start simple and fine tune along the way.

If anyone doing the bulk orders, Pls include 2 sets of GPS under bluefinz accounts. Will safe keep with Dolphin gangs and loan out to those who are interested to log their PB at PA. I do not hv good experience on the Garmin Foretrex 201 because I have damage 2 sets within a yr.

Suggest Data will be presented in km.h ( Knots )

Meng - Yr help and experience here will be very much appreciated.

May I start off the contest with a 48.8 km/h. Got it today, 03-01-08 - 2.30pm, off Keta during a small N storm. (PJ verified the display maximum.)

If anyone would like to send me his track log file (GPX file), I can let him have his best five 2 sec runs and best five 10 sec runs.  Yes, Norman, my offer to you still stands. Smiley

i have received a few interests in Naviman GPS purchase.
i will try my best to induce GPS sailing interest since it can be easily reached to each of us, speed-freak, easily.

order is still open, hope to set the last order on next wed.
some kiters are ordering it too.

some facts on GPS ;

Garmin is GPS market leader but Foretrex201 tends to give problems after sometime.
Naviman is very new here, i'm trying to get a reply from them on warranty issue since there is no agent in S'pore.

most speed-sailing sites highly recommend Naviman then Foretrex 201. it can even used on your daily runs and bikings.

regarding authenticity of clocked speed, i let all sailors who are familar with each other to be the judge.
afterall, it's meant to be fun.

as for me on GPS, beside speed, i can test and check my formula gear on upwind and downwind difference with fins, sails and mastfoot positions, endless 'tuning' to play with.

i would recommend a waterproof pack to house your GPS device, prolong it. i will post further again soon on this pack.

also, i will work with Norman, who is a Dutch ex-national sailor (NED 1) to plot charts on the PC.

in the meantime, the wind is over at changi due to current unfavourable wind direction.
