Sukdev,

During winter time I asked you about the new 147 and others. I mentioned that I had trouble with my 12 meter on my star156 and that I could not gain any extra out of the sail compared to my 9.8.

Well, I got myself a new devil II and now I can use the 12. The board is really easy to sail fast and high. Not a lot of adjustement necessary.
My only concern now is the fin. Still sail it with the standard curtis that came with the 156. But I ordered a C3 F 70 which will come shortly. I hope to get a bit more lift and power from that fin especially in marginal conditions. The curtis just doesn't give enhough which means that I have to bear off to soon. Would like to be able to pinch a little more.

So for now I think I made the right choices. Now I need all the TOW I can get to get prepared for the upcoming races. With no real training all the investements will not pay off for sure meaning I would not do better then last year. So back to the beach....

Thanks for the support so far.

For the stronger winds I will need an other fin and because it doesn't happen so often I will not get an expensive C3 for that. What Hurricane fin can do the job? a 70 or a 67?? An which type.

I will sail it with 9.8 (When really overpowered but not that much chop) or the 9.0 when there is also a lot of chop and waves.

Thanks in advance.

Allan, my 2nd fin for 9.3 on formula is r13h 66. You could go for hurricane 67 or so. PJ & Thye have FRB4 on order, will feedback once we test them out.

Sukdev,

I got my light wind covered for now but I need some advice on the strong wind part. As mentioned, I sail the devil II. What fin would be a good option for strong winds with the devil and with 9 meter sails. I'm looking for a Hurricane fin. I'm 80 kg and only 1.76 tall.
Thanks upfront.

Cheers Sven

Hi Sven

If you are looking for Hurriccane , you could contact Mr.Otmar at Hurricane directly, he will able to give some feedback.

For my 70 Kg weight I have ordered FRB4-70 for light wind and a FBR1 - 68cm for high wind on my 147. The width of this 2 fin is actually 10mm difference.

I chooose Hurricane because is a custom fin but with good performance and I need to wait only 3 weeks to get 4 fins for my other buddies.

Sven,

I don't know the sailing characteristics of the devil II so this is purely based on my experience with Starboard, BIC & Drops. I'd say go with 66cm for your next fin. Which particular hurricane? Well, I'd be guessing if I suggested a particular model so as PJ suggests contact Otmar directly.

I'm inclined to go for a shorter length rather than go for something with a narrower chord etc because my 2cents theory is that in strong winds moving the point of maximum torque (crudely 50% of fin length) closer to the hull gives better control. I've no basis for this other than just my own testing & "feel" so you may want alternative opinions. I've been very pleased with the 66cm r13h during the few times I've been out with a 9.3 overpowered. Another thing is that in strong winds I'd go with a hard fin..again just my personal preference.

Thanks both for responding so quickly,

What puzzles me the most (although I hear it more and more) is that for stronger winds we need a harder fin instead of a softer one. I was conditioned to believe that the harder the wind the softer the mast and the softer the fin. This is no longer true (maybe it never was)??

Concerning lenght I think I agree with your feeling Sukhdev, shorter is better for control, for weekend racers like myself control is better then swimming so maybe a 70 with shorter chord is better as long as you can control it. I prefer control.

I'll try to contact Otmar to get an advice on the type of fin he recommends. Maybe a FRB2 66 Hard??
