Hi ,

I have my 2003 Exocet Formula few months ago and I can hook and use footstaps. It is great joy for full-planing on 10 to 15 knots wind by using the original Select 70 cm fin and 9m sail.(I am 1.70 metres tall and weigh 80kg)

My problems is : when it is in strong 16~22 knots wind,I cannot control the board well even i change my 9.00 sail to 7.80 sail .

(a)  is my 70 cm fin too large?
(b)  is the 7.80m sail too large on 18 knots wind on the formula board ?
(c)  is the board too large on 18 knots wind?

I like the board very much .  Your advise is higly appreciated !

hi leo, le ho ma ?

i had a brief spell on the board. the board is really nice to ride on.
refering to your questions ;

with your weight, u can definately sail in stronger wind with your 9mē and 70cm fin.
 takes time and practise.

1. however, u may want to shorten the fin to 67-65cm if u find the board tends to' lift' too much. another way, is to shift your mastfoot position forward to keep the nose down.

2. i think 7.8 is too small on the FW board. 9mē is really fine if u downhaul more or tune your rig properly in stronger conditions.

3. FW board can be sailed in stronger wind. so it depends on the sailor.

i had my fair share of strong wind problems before, but after tuning and practise, i got used to it.

don't let that stop u, hope u will enjoy even more now.

happy sailing

Thanks Meng.

I will take more TOW in strong wind.(18~20 knots)

You know, it make confused me when all the sailors in the beach were yelling over-power on 7, 7.5 and I was struggling with my Formual and 9mē .

Cheers & Happy sailing

Meng was scare to use his 10.5 at one time when the wind was honking at 20+ knot in Malaysia....but he is right, pratice + ur guts make u a stronger man.

For ur weight u definately can do more than this. I am 187cm/92 kg sailor with about 2 years plus experience on formula board. So far i always use 10.5m for the wind range u mention(But b4 that i not even can hold on a 9m during monsoon season)but prefer on a 66cm fin. . My next sail is 11.6 only use up to around 15+ knots then i overpower like a gal..

It's a pain in the ass brother, really suffer at 18 knots and up but it is also a "FUN" and crazy things to do when the rest are using smaller sail yet they are over power. It also depend on the sea condition, when it is too rought i prefer to sit and watch other sailor over power on their smaller equipmen...

Happy sailing.

Leo,
I have a Tectonic 58cm FIN that will suit your 9m in strong wind condition.  .  It suited me very well on my FW 147 even on 10.5m sail during Monsoon season. If you are keen, please call 96918979.. Fin going cheap

Hi Ken ,

You can try Stanley Main Beach (Barry Ho,28137561) or  Sai Kung ( Eddy Tam 97331228 ) for Easterly Wind .
