hi Sukhdev

now that i have my board sorted out with the recent purchase of a hypersonic 125 which will be my 1 board quiver for aucklands variable winds, i need to sort out my sails and could use some input.

my current quiver is;

7m north spectro on 490 mast and 185-236 boom

8.2 arrows burner raf on 490 mast and 185-236 boom

8.8 arrows burner raf on 490 mast and 185-235 boom

as you can see, it's pretty economical with three sails on 1 mast and a boom. i bought the 8.8 intending to replace the 8.2 to have a 7m/8.8m two sail quiver but now i am able to maintain three sails so the way i see it i have two options.

option 1.
swap the 8.2 for a 7.8 to have a close but limited 7m/7.8m/8.8m quiver.
this is still economical mast/boom usage but is maybe a little close and limited?

option 2.
swap the 8.2 for a 6m to have a 6m/7m/8.8m spread out quiver. this is more spread out but creats a sizable gap between the 7m and 8.8m. and will require another mast.

option 3?
keep the 7m and 8.2m and swap the 8.8 for a 9.5 by using a powerex fixed extension but i'd have to replace my hpl alu with a carbon boom and i'd be using a 490+ 40cm fixed extension which would not be ideal.

i'm 80 kgs, winds a variable enough to be able to use any / all of the options.

any input much appreciated.

ps, maybe i'd be better off only having two sails and swapping the third sail for an aftermarket fin?

regards,

rod

Hi Rod,

my comments below:

option 1.
swap the 8.2 for a 7.8 to have a close but limited 7m/7.8m/8.8m quiver.
this is still economical mast/boom usage but is maybe a little close and limited?

going 7 to 7.8 is really close, rarely warranted.

option 2.
swap the 8.2 for a 6m to have a 6m/7m/8.8m spread out quiver. this is more spread out but creats a sizable gap between the 7m and 8.8m. and will require another mast.

sounds reasonable and doable. My equivalent jump is 9.3 to 7.6, I've never really found the need for a 8.x for my own sailing here. This option gives a big wind range spread.

option 3?
keep the 7m and 8.2m and swap the 8.8 for a 9.5 by using a powerex fixed extension but i'd have to replace my hpl alu with a carbon boom and i'd be using a 490+ 40cm fixed extension which would not be ideal.

This should work ok but I would lean to option 2, especially if the 6.0 is going to see a fair amount of usage. 8.8 to 9.5 is a bit of a small jump for recreational use, these days I recommend a 1.5sq meter jump in the larger sizes.

Thanks Sukhdev. I've sold my 8.2 so for now I'm using the 7m/8.8m. The Hyper 125 seems to plane up reasonably well and I think the significant cost of going to a 10x rig would far out weigh the early planing benefits over the 8.8, at least that's how it seems.

Might even spend the money on some waterstarting lessons and a decent winter wetsuit now it's coming into winter here :-).

My first session on the 125 with the 7m well powered was a real blast and I must have had everything set just right. The last couple of sessions have been with mixed results but i think I'm slowly getting there.

I think it's about time I marked all my settings and started to experiment with adjusting things to get it all right.
