I understand one rule of thumb is to position the nearer (to mast)harness line about 1/3 of the distance from mast to boom. Is this measured in a straight line or along the curvature of the boom?

don't know that rule, interesting, will try to estimate on a few sails.
the crude (and possibly silly?) rule i use is to sight a line from bottom of mast extension to tip of mast after setting downhaul & outhaul. the front harness line position is about a fist width or so behind this line. seems to sort of work for me. you can see that imaginary "line" in the picture below
