Anybody know where is the best place to stay for Kuantan sailing? What is the price? Also sail size to bring?

only 2 choices really.
www.derhu.com is the first, long flat beach in front, rates are reasonable but don't eat here, drive into town for superb food (and DONT do the singaporean thing and say so cheap, so cheap, it wont be the next time you eat there).

slightly down the beach is the La Village resort.

Asian Windsurfing Tour will be held in La Village in Jan.

sea is flatter infront of De Rhu, waves better in front of La village but wind is just a tiny bit more onshore.

let me know if you need more info.

aarrgghh..forgot to answer sail size..well that depends..on a windy day a 5.x would be great, I guess for most average sailors a 6.x and a 5.x should suffice; though when it gets light a larger sail would be nice. Its windiest and roughest at the start of the monsoon, especially the 1st 2 weeks of the monsoon. The malaysian met service gives quite accurate small craft warnings..this means great windsurfing!

Are windsurfing kits available for rental at both resorts ?
If so, how is the condition of kits & price ?

alan, La village has a water sports centre run by a good windsurfer Leo Leow, but the rental gear is so so. Bring your own. If you are not experienced in launching in waves then launching at De Rhu is easier but I prefer the waves at La Village.

The bay is extremely safe, if you break anything just let the current drift you in, all that will happen is you will have a long walk back.

safety tip: when drifting in thru waves, hold on to your mast tip, not your board or boom.

De Rhu is recommended as it has better wind than La Village.

De Rhu's beach is pretty gradual and is excellent for beach starting especially when the surf is pretty small (0.5 to 1m). The breakers do come in in sets and this is excellent for jumps.

High tide offers relatively flat water while low tide offers mucking around in the surf.

De Rhu also has covered board storage facilties and an excellent pool for non-sailing conditions.

By the way De Rhu also offers special reduced rates for board sailors.

General usable sail size:- 5.5sqm to 6.8sqm. (Bring at least two rigs a 5m and 6m to max sailing).
Boards:- 260 to 290. (80 to 130 liter slalom or free ride)
Best wind conditions:- Week 4 December to End January. (Average wind force of about force 4 to 5)

See U there!
