Report from Penang Reggata 2003

The wind has been great in Penang.
2 days before raceday, the wind was blowing solidly in 15-20 kts.

Total sailors = about 20 Formula starters in 10-17 kts.
Course - Sauage (4th race - 2 rounds)
Top 4 results (5 races) ;

1st-Boa (THA),    3,1,2,1,2 (9.8m² NP/Kinetic)
2nd-Koo  (THA)  1,4,1,RTD,1 (9.8m²NP/StarB. 147)
3rd-Meng (SIN)   2,2,4,2,3  (9.3m²/11m²/Bic 1.4)
4th-Levi (MAS)   4,3,3,3,4 (N3 9.8m²/StarB. 136)

Koo was unlucky to lose the 1st position by making mistakes in race 2 and a broken boom in race 4. He was the fastest sailor among the fleet. Great upwind and blasting downwind speed. Infact, no one can touch him on the race course.

Boa and I were pretty close to each other during upwind but he always managed to pip me on the downwind with better speed. A couple of close photo finish for both of us.

Levi was distant behind from the top 3.

I choosed the 11m² for extra 'power' on the downwind to chase the 'Jones (THAs)'. The upwind ability of the 11m² is good. I had to 'tahan' on the 11m² during the last 2 races when the wind picked up.

Thye likes his N4 9.8m ²too. He was unfortunate that his fin was 'sliding' off too much during upwind, if not, I get another headache.

It always a pleasure to compete in Penang.
Great food, parties and wind !
Big thks to the organsier for their hospitality.
Will be back next year again.
Hope to see u guys there too.

May the wind be with u.

The importance of a good hard fin really make a lot of difference. we are talking about a 1-2 degree pointing angle that could work out to be afew hundred meter ahead by the windward mark.

I've try N4 on both a 34 & 32 mcs mast, the difference is on the downwind, the trhust is too great with my below 60kg frame for a 34 mcs, well on a 32 mcs mast I need less outhual as the sail twist open very nicely giving me better control.

I think the sail works very well overpower as I've a better chance to match the thai's in term of pointing ability, speed and control when the wind keeps up at 18knots with my smaller stiffer fin (62cm).

PS: hitting jellyfish can send sailors out of control in Penang
